Efficacy, safety and affordability
|
The bonding of copper with indomethacin radically alters the efficacy and safety profile of indomethacin. Analgesic and anti-inflammatory potency is increased, while toxic side effects are minimised.
CU-ALGESIC IS THE ONLY COPPER BONDED NSAID AVAILABLE IN THE WORLD FOR USE IN ANIMALS. DEVELOPED AND PATENTED BY NATURE VET IN CONJUNCTION WITH SYDNEY UNIVERSITY.
Efficacy
Copper bonding increases analgesic and anti-inflammatory potency by providing broad spectrum activity as an inhibitor of inflammatory mediators of the Cox 1, Cox 2, and Lox pathways. But Cu-Algesic also spares nitric oxide to maintain micro vascular circulation, has free radical scavenging activity ten times greater than superoxide dismutase, and inhibits bradykinin and leucotriene production.
Safety
Copper bonding increases potency so that copper indomethacin is effective at only 0.2mg/kg once daily in dogs for short term therapy or 0.1mg/kg for long term management. Rapid absorption leads to rapid onset activity but reduced contact time in the GI tract, so helping reduce GI ulcerations.
Toxicity studies give Cu-Algesic a Therapeutic Index of 15 at short term dosage rates and 30 for long term treatment. Few adverse events have been reported over 6 years of clinical use in several countries.
